Literature Text

You were woken by the slight tickle of Gilberts breath.

You slowly opened your eyes, his constant breathing ruffling your hair. He held you in an embrace, his chin resting on your head, you were lying on one of his arms and the other one was loosely laid over your shoulder.

Your bright red eyes looked at his bare chest

…Bare Chest?

Oh god he was naked again.

Yelping, and feeling your face heat up slightly you pushed against him and threw yourself off the bed.

He gave a snort/snore of protest and rolled over.

You were on the ground, trying to calm yourself down, before you looked out the window by Gilberts unused bed.

It was morning, a fine, cloudless morning.

The Markets!

You had almost forgotten, stumbling up you grabbed Gilberts clothes, lazily thrown on the ground and tossed them at him.

He didn't move.

"Gilbert!"

…Nothing

You ran over to him, snatched the pillow out from underneath him and proceeded to beat him with it.

"Wake-Up-God-Damn-it!" You said between each blow to his head

"Gack-Gyah! Stop it girl! I am awake!" he squawked, raising an arm in defence

You pointed to his clothes "Get Dressed, we have to go to the markets!"

"Yes, Ok Just give me a min-"

"Now!"

He flinched back and you went back to the window, once you heard the clanking of metal capped boots you knew he was ready, you turned around, swept your cloak up of the floor and sprinted out of the cramped room, your silky black hair trailing after you.

"Hurry up!" you said from halfway down the hallway.

Gilbert laughed to himself on his way out.

The markets were crowded with people, of all ages and sizes, children, mothers, every kind of person you could imagine.

Feeling sorry for snapping at Gilbert, you brought him breakfast, which was freshly hunted and cooked meat (For a change).

You two spent the whole day, visiting various stalls and booths, looking at the variety of things the markets had to offer, there were glittery pieces of jewellery, strange but delicious kinds of foods, and unusual items that you had never heard off.

It was a very curious, exiting, but exhausting day.

However, the thing that you were searching for wasn't under any of those categories.

You spotted a small-darkened alleyway, between busy stores. In it you could see the figure of a man, sitting cross legged on the ground.

You watched as people walked by, not noticing a thing. It was discrete, yes. But there wasn't a single acknowledgement, or side-ways glance at it at all, it was almost as like they…

…Couldn't even see it…!

You had found it! What you were searching for, you approached the alleyway swiftly, leaving Gilbert observing different kinds of blades, daggers and swords.

You passed through the charm laid on the alleyway, and an invisible breeze passed through your hair.

The main sitting upon the blanket looked up at you.

"You can see us"

There was no one else with him, a shiver of fear passed through your spine.

He had a long scraggly beard, his facial features covered by the black cloak he was wearing

"You are alone here, sir" you said nervously

"Am I?" he asked

You felt butterflies rise in your stomache.

"Do you have any books on Magic?" You asked sheepishly, your words rushed, desperate to change the subject.

"You wish to learn magic? A witch with such powerful blood as you should already know this…Who is your teacher?"

You didn't understand, how did he know this?

"My teacher is dead" You snapped

"Ahhhh-" he replied, he turned, still sitting, and threw an old tattered book on the ground.

It was some kind of blue leather, tattered in some places. It had silver writing on it that you couldn't recognized, it shone when it caught the sun.

"That's all you have?" you asked

"Are you searching for quality or quantity?" he said

"What will you trade for it?"

"Something of equal value" he said slowly

"Which is?"

"That cloak you are wearing"

You stepped back and clutched it defensively "No!" you shouted "It is just fabric, there must be-"

"Child I do not want your cloak for its material worth" he said "I want it for its personal worth. That cloak means a lot to you, yes?"

"I-It does" you managed to say

"That book means a lot to me, and that cloak means a lot to you, that is a fair trade is it not?"

Appauled and angry, you began to leave "No, no it isn't"

You steeped out of the alley, you were furious. You needed that book.

"Red! Were have you been!?" shouted Gilbert, rushing up to you.

You remembered how you just left him.

"Im sorry" you said, stepping towards him "I saw a stall that looked Interesting"

"And was it?" He asked

"Uh-No, no, not really, but you know what does look interesting?"

"What"

"Those pastries over there, are you hungry?"

He grinned "Do you even have to ask?"

You two gulped the sweets down without remourse and continued searching around the markets.

Why does a young girl who live alone have so much money you ask? It was a simple transformation spell that turns stone into gold. You didn't think much of it, since you could create all the things that money could by.
With the right amount of stone and wood, you could make a castle build itself. All you needed was the goods. But you didn't care for big houses or castles, a small cosy cabin would be preferred to a palace, and a warm sheepskin rug would be preferred to a silk bed.
It was the small things in life that were worth the most.

At the end of the day you had bought a leather sack, to carry around your items in.

The day was getting late by the time you two decided to leave.

You were now relaxing by a stream, you dipped your feet in the water, and Gilbert was harassing the fish.

You sighed. That book would've come in handy.
You had made a deal with yourself to learn the ways of magic, just like your Nana did. You wanted to make her proud someday, but you didn't know how…
You guessed magic was a good way to start.

"Hey"

You jumped as Gilbert sat down next to you.

"Something is wrong, what is it?" he asked, straight to the point

"Nothing, im-im just in a sighing mood" you sighed again

He stared at you with his eyes, both of your scarlet gazes met.

"Whats wrong?" he asked

You gave in "Can you help me with something?"

"After you tell me whats wrong"

"I am telling you, you just need to answer my question first, can you help me?" you asked again

"Yes" he said without hesitating

"You have to help me steal something" you said

His eyes widened, before a smirk plastered itself to his lips "And here I was thinking that you were a good girl"

"Shut Up! Im only doing this because the man selling this item wont listen to reason" You could tell that old man in the alley was lying, that book meant nothing to him, he was just trying to scam you out of your cloak that was gifted to you by your grandmother.

"So what are we stealing?" he asked, leaning back, enjoying himself

"A Book"

He looked at you " A book!? That's it!?"

"It's a magic book, I need this" you insisted.

"If you say so"

You two planned out the scenario, and thought of all the things that could go wrong, you made a plan for each and every one, and then…Night fell.

Gilbert was a tall, strong white wolf. You stuffed his clothes into the leather bag you had bought, and re-entered the Markets.

You returned to the alleyway, silently muttering an incantation.

The main turned to you.

"I was expecting you"

You snapped your fingers and exerted a certain amount of energy. The spell took effect, and slammed against the wall with an unknown force, the man sat there. stunned.

He couldn't move

"Were you expecting that old man?"

You asked taking the book.

You went to sprint out of the alley before he appeared in a whisp of smoke before you.

"Yes, I was, foolish child" He snatched the book back.

You smiled

"What about him?" You asked, looking at something behind him.

He turned to see a giant snow-white wolf behind him. It snarled revealing its fangs.

He turned and back up against You.

Not comfortable with the sudden contact, you leant back against the wall, the wolf barked and began to bound forward.
The old man stumbled back, before Gilbert had the chance to 'attack' him.

Once you were sure he had gone, you flashed the book at Gilbert, you could tell he was smiling.

A screech broke the victorious silence as the spell on the alley broke, villagers gathered to scream at the werewolf.

You looked at him.

"We may as well make the most of this" you decided

You murmured a few words and your cloak faded to black instead of red.

You began rushing towards the villagers, they shouted in fear.

Gilbert nudged you from behind, you began to fall, but he nuzzled/threw you up, and you were now on his back, clutching onto his fur, being careful not to pull it out.

You felt the shifting of his muscles and body as he ran out of the alley, and skidded to a halt.
He howled and the villagers shrank back in fear.

You couldn't help but giggle at their terrified faces.

"You're a bad influence on me" you whispered, crouching down by his ear.

He leapt forward and began to dash, away from the crowd of people.
You laughed at the sensation of riding a giant wolf, your cloak trailed after you, your hood fell back, and your long, sin-black hair was whipped behind you.

You laughed as Gilbert ran faster.

Gilbert tumbled into a butchers stall, and snatched up some meat. You leant down as he carried you past that pastry stand you were so fond of, you snapped your fingers, and they all flew into your arms.

You threw one forward, and Gilbert jumped up to catch it, and ate in a single bite.
You bit into one, it was sweet, with raspberries in it, and the fact that it was stolen made it all the sweeter.

You knew you were going to pay for this eventually. For stealing from the most active markets in this land, but you had played the part of the innocent village girl for to long, it was about time you had a little fun.

You two reached the bridge that crossed the stream you were at not to long ago, and Gilbert padded away into the night, he found a forest clearing with lots of grass before letting you hop of him.

You were still smiling like crazy, tonight had been the most fun you have had in a while.

You turned to him, and he returned your stare. Only a second past before you stood forward and wrapped your arms around him, burying your face in his fur.

"Thank you" you murmered

You felt him jump at your sudden movement, but he didn't pull back, you felt him nuzzle into you.

You let him go.

"Well…" you started "Im sorry, but theres no roof over us tonight"

He scoffed and sat down where he was. You supposed that meant 'I don't need a bed, im a wolf remember?

You sighed before lying right next to him, leaning against his back.

He turned to you.

"What!? I don't have fur you know, so share yours" you shouted

He rolled over, and gripped your fallen hood with his teeth.

You yelped in protest as he dragged you across the grass over to him, he laid you down beside him, as he rested his forepaws.

You were technically in the same spot, leaning against him, except now you were leaning against his side.
You didn't know what he did that for, but you didn't complain, you simply laid your cloak over you and laid down on the cushiony grass.
You began to doze off, and felt yourself be nudged closer into him.

You looked up at Gilbert, he pushed you gently, it reminded you of when Grandma would tuck you in.

You rolled over, with your back against his side, and reached for him, you pulled him closer and kissed his forhead.

You felt him tense, and he flattened his ears, before…relaxing a bit, he nozzled you forward and shook you off playfully.

"Good night" you mumbled, using the huge paw he had given you as a pillow.

He replied by placing his head in your outstretched arm.

And once again, you fell asleep, with the sound of his heartbeat, and earthy scent.
